Month 2

Today we officially started the second month of the government shutdown. I am currently still on furlough, so I have not been paid for 32 days. Fortunately, the military has, thus my husband's paycheck has been coming in regularly. I That means we have been better off than many, but I was worried along with everyone else about the paycheck on the 1st, because I had heard nothing about if it was coming or not. Last night while handing out candy to the neighborhood kids I stressed if I had spent too much money on candy. Money that we might need to buy groceries today.

From the information I was able to find the paycheck on the 15th is in question, that means I need to make sure our bills are all paid, including our vehicle payment and insurance. I have tried to stock up on inexpensive foods that can help us in case mid month pay does not come. A number of programs are available to workers who are furloughed. This is the time to call your credit card companies, cell phone providers, and other service providers. A quick call now can save you and your credit in the future.

It is time to cut down the extras. Should regular pay come next pay day, great! If not, you are in better shape when it doesn't come. I miss the fancy coffee, I will be very honest. The extra $100 in the bank can fill up a gas tank or feed us for a few days.

Once all of this is settled and everyone is getting a steady paycheck we are going to talk more about budgets and where to find what works for you. Right now I want you to know you are not alone. We are all concerned about what is happening and how our finances are going to work out. We will get through it. The military community is tough, and so are you.
