Military pay

Understand Your Pay

Your LES and military pay can feel complicated at first. Start by separating what you earn, what is added as an allowance or special pay, and what is deducted before the money reaches your account.

Start with the LES

Use the LES as a recurring financial document—not just a pay stub.

  • Review entitlements, deductions, allotments, leave, and year-to-date totals.
  • Compare the current LES with the prior month after a PCS, promotion, deployment, or benefit change.
  • Ask about a line item when you do not understand it; do not assume an unfamiliar deduction is correct.

Allowances and special pays

These can change with location, status, orders, and family circumstances.

  • Verify current BAH, BAS, OHA, COLA, or special-pay information through official sources when a decision depends on it.
  • Do not treat every allowance as permanent household income.
  • Plan for timing differences when pay or reimbursements change.

What to do next

Use take-home pay as the starting point for household cash-flow planning.

  • Build a budget around actual deposits, not only base pay.
  • Recheck automatic savings and allotments after a pay change.
  • Use the Financial Readiness Assessment when you are unsure which area deserves attention first.
